Budapest, 1 August 2022 - Alongside the initiating Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH), 12 public and social organisations met at the inaugural meeting of the Family-Friendly Working Group. The interprofessional forum will work together in order to reduce the consumer vulnerability of Hungarian families.
The Family-Friendly Working Group set up by the Ministry of Justice at the initiative of Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the Hungarian Competition Authority, also a member of the Consumer Protection Roundtable, held its first meeting. In addition to the GVH, 12 additional organisations – the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, the Hungarian National Bank, the National Media and Infocommunications Authority, the National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, the Centre for Fundamental Rights, the Safe Society Foundation, the Association for Young Families, the National Association of Large Families, the Kopp Mária Institute, and the Saint Anthony of Padua Parish in Budapest-Pasarét – participated in the event. The aim of the working group is to pool the experience of the various organisations involved in consumer and family protection and to channel it into the work of the Consumer Protection Roundtable.
The participants of the inaugural meeting set to work immediately: the GVH raised a proposal to include family relationships in the legislation prohibiting unfair commercial practices against consumers.
"Families have an important role in Hungary. It would be reasonable to recognise families also by considering them as a vulnerable group of consumers that can be identified individually. This will facilitate their special protection in the official proceedings, and therefore we will make an agreed proposal for legislative amendment following a public consultation, which I will submit to the Consumer Protection Roundtable", said Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the GVH.
"Representing the interests and protecting the rights of families is a priority for consumer protection and the Consumer Protection Roundtable set up by the Ministry of Justice. The Family-Friendly Working Group launched today also aims to achieve this goal, and we welcome the proposals of the Working Group in our joint work to provide increased protection for Hungarian families”, said Nóra Kupecki, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice.
