The GVH will present the results of its market analysis on artificial intelligence at the 50th European Competition Day
Budapest, 18 October 2024 – The Hungarian Competition Authority (Gazdasági Versenyhivatal - GVH) is organising the 50th European Competition Day in Budapest on the 22nd of October, as an official programme of the Hungarian EU Presidency. The international conference will bring together prominent experts in European competition policy to discuss the current challenges of competition law. The main topics of the event will be the link between sustainability, competitiveness and competition law, the experiences of the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the future opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence. The GVH will also present the results of its market analysis on artificial intelligence.
European Competition Day has been held every six months since 2000, traditionally organised by the competition authority of the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The event is one of the most important professional conferences in European competition policy, bringing together leading experts in competition law to share their knowledge and experience. The conference in Budapest will feature presentations by distinguished and widely respected experts such as Natalie Harsdorf, Director General of the Austrian Competition Authority, and Benoît Cœuré, President of the French Competition Authority.
The 50th European Competition Day, which will take place on the 22nd of October 2024 will be opened by Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the GVH, and will focus on three main topics. Firstly, participants will discuss the relationship between competitiveness, sustainability and competition policy, exploring how the latter can support both objectives without compromising its principles.
The second topic of the conference is the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The EU legislation came into force over a year ago to help prevent multinational platforms from abusing their market power. Participants will hear first-hand from the main implementers of the legislation about their experiences to date.
The third main focus of the conference will be the opportunities and competition risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI). In recent years, the technology has not only burst into everyday life but has also attracted increasing attention in the field of competition policy. The relevance of the issue is reinforced by the European Union's regulation on artificial intelligence, the AI Act, which entered into force on the 1st of August 2024. The GVH launched a market analysis in early 2024 to investigate the impact of AI on competition and consumers' transactional decisions. The GVH will present the main findings of its market analysis to the international community at the conference.
In the framework of the opening panel discussion of the conference, the Hungarian Competition Authority will present its latest book entitled "Twenty Years of EU Competition Law in Hungary". The English publication offers a comprehensive examination of the evolution of European competition law and policy in the country, and their impact on national legislation and enforcement.
